Background: INTRODUCTION: Indian Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi, led members of her family to the banks of the Jumma River to attend a memorial service for her late son Sanjay, held on Tuesday (23 June). The service was to mark first anniversary of Sanjay's death in a plane crash.

SYNOPSIS: As family members gathered on the river bank to lay wreaths at the memorial, rallies were being held throughout India to mark the anniversary of the death of Mrs Gandhi's favourite son.

Mrs Gandhi was accompanied by members of her family as she led the procession to the memorial. Among those who made the dedication with her was Sanjay's wife Menka and their 18-month-old son Varun. Also at the ceremony was Sanjay's brother Rajiv, who recently took the first steps along the road to a political career by winning a parliamentary seat and being nominated to the National Council of the ruling Congress Party's youth wing. It was Sanjay who had built the Youth Congress into a powerful influence in Indian politics, although its power has notably declined since his death a year ago.

The Indian government issued a commemorative postage stamp to mark the anniversary of Sanjay's death - a move condemned by opponents because such issues are usually confined to national heroes.
