• Short Summary

WEST GERMANY'S NEW PRESIDENT, DR. GUSTAVE HEINEMANN, LAID A GHOST OF GERMANY'S PAST TO REST?

  • Description

WEST GERMANY'S NEW PRESIDENT, DR. GUSTAVE HEINEMANN, LAID A GHOST OF GERMANY'S PAST TO REST YESTERDAY (25 JULY) WHEN HE ATTENDED THE OPENING NIGHT OF THE BAYREUTH FESTIVAL. NO PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL GERMAN REPUBLIC HAS ATTENDED THIS EVENT IN THE POSTWAR PERIOD.

THE BAYREUTH FESTIVAL THEATRE WAS BUILT IN THE 19TH CENTURY BY RICHARD WAGNER TO PROVIDE A PERMANENT HOME FOR HIS OPERAS. BUT IN THE 1930'S ADOLF HITLER GAVE THE WAGNER FESTIVAL IN THIS BAVARIAN TOWN A NEW SIGNIFICANT BY HIS PRESENCE AT THE PERFORMANCES, TREATING THEM AS DEMONSTRATIONS OF NATIONALIST FEELING.

AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR, THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC, PROFESSOR THEODOR HEUSS AND DR. HEINRICH LUEBKE, FELT OBLIGED OUT OF CONSIDERATION FOR FOREIGN OPINION, TO AVOID ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL.

BUT YESTERDAY DR. HEINEMANN MADE A DECISIVE BREAK, BY MINGLING WITH THE GUESTS AT THE OPENING NIGHT OF THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL, AND HEARING A PERFORMANCE OF WAGNER'S "FLYING DUTCHMAN".
