    Chien Sung-yen, the celebrated artist who is also president of the Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting of Kiangsu Province.

    Chien Sung-yen is seventy nine years old and he has painted with the Chinese brush for over 60 years. Although advanced in age, his works retain the spring and power of the art.

    Chien Sung-yen is a master of traditional brush-work. His penchant for new techniques gives his works an originality unmatched by his contemporaries.

    He has painted more than a thousand Chinese inks since 1949, which come in six volumes. His works have been exhibited in Peking, Tientsin and Nanking, as well as in ten countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

    These four scrolls of flowers and birds show the fine craftsmanship of his early works.

    As one of the early proponents who introduced real life to traditional Chinese painting, his works respond to the life and struggle of the labouring people and pulsate with the march of the times.

    He is best at landscapes. 'Verdant Cypress on Mount Taishan' was made in 1959.

    This painting is titled 'The Fragrance of Ripening Rice Fills the Lower Yangtze Valley'.

    He has made six cross-country tours after he reached 60 in the course of which he produced many fine works.

    Miyun Reservoir lies in the northern suburb of Peking, at the foot of the Great Wall.

    'A Lofty Pine on Peak of Mount Taishan'.

    'The Huangyangchieh Pass in the Chingkangshan Mountains' where the Chinese Red Army won a major battle against the KMT troops in 1928.

    Maoping in the Chingkangshan Mountains and the house where Mao Tsetung lived in 1928.

    Hsipaipo, the seat of the Party Central Committee from May 1948 to March 1949.

    Chien Sung-yen did 'Hsipaipo' and the 'New Tachai' at the age of 78.

    A part of his time is devoted to summoning up his rich experience in Chinese ink painting.

    How best to preserve and carry forward the best traditions of Chinese ink painting is often the subject of his conversations with other painters of the traditional school.
