  • Description

The GBP5,500 Marathon walk from John O'Groats, Scotland, to Lands End, Cornwall, organized by holiday camp owner Billy Butlin, continues, and thirty-five-year-old David Robinson from Bermuda, was still well in the lead - thirty miles ahead of his nearest rival - as he neared Glencoe at the end of the fourth day Feb 29. Robinson had then covered 220 miles of the 1,000 mile journey.

Of the original field of 715 starters, only 230 remain, and Mr. Butlin has requested police to assist stranded competitors by providing them with a meal and train fare home. Most of those now out of the race retired owing to fatigue and blistered feet.

Miss Wendy Lewis, 18, of Liverpool, still heads women competitors, while Philip Barker, aged 21, of Hampstead, London, is walking in black jacket, striped trousers and bowler hat and strides along swinging an umbrella. Each morning he changes his suit from a wardrobe in an accompanying van.
