    KING PAUL OF GREECE VISITED THE AEGEAN ISLAND OF LESBOS THIS WEEK FOR A CEREMONY TO HONOUR BISHOP IGNATIUS, ONE OF THE FATHERS OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE. THE KING, ACCOMPANIED BY PRINCESS IRENE, ARRIVED ABOARD A GREEK NAVAL DESTROYER AT THE PORT OF MYTILENE, CAPITAL OF LESBOS, ON TUESDAY.

    WARM CHEERS GREETED THE ROYAL COUPLE AS THEY STROLLED THROUGH THE PORT'S STREETS TO ST. MARY'S CHURCH WHERE THEY ATTENDED A SERVICE IN THE BISHOP'S MEMORY. LATER, THE KING UNVEILED A BUST OF BISHOP IGNATIUS IN THE CHURCH COURTYARD.

    BISHOP IGNATIUS WAS BISHOP OF HUNGARY AND WALLACIA, AN AREA OF RUMANIA, DURING LAST CENTURY. HE HELPED PREPARE THE GREEK UPRISING AGAINST THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN 1821.

    AFTER THE FIRST ABORTIVE REVOLT, THE BISHOP AND OTHER GREEKS FLED TO LEGHORN, ITALY, WHERE HE LATER DIED. HIS REMAINS WERE REMOVED FROM LEGHORN TO ATHENS RECENTLY, THENCE TO LESBOS, HIS BIRTH PLACE. THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH IS EXPECTED SOON TO CANONIZE THE BISHOP.
