  • Description

RESCUE WORKS DRILLED DEEP INTO THE FLOODED IRON ORE PIT AT LENGEDE, NEAR HANOVER, TODAY (SATURDAY) IN A FINAL BID TO RESCUE FOUR MINERS TRAPPED FOR 48 HOURS. HOPE FOR 39 OTHERS HAS BEEN ABANDONED. THEY ARE DRILLING TOWARDS A HIGH-PRESSURE AIR CHAMBER 295 FEET (90 METER) BELOW GROUND WHERE THEY HOPE THE FOUR MEN MIGHT HAVE TAKEN REFUGE AFTER THE MINE WAS FLOODED ON THURSDAY NIGHT. THE 39 VICTIMS LOST THEIR LIVES IN A TORRENT OF WATER AND MUD.

FILM SHOWS THE RESCUE OPERATIONS IN PROGRESS YESTERDAY, WITH SHOTS OF A MINER TALKING DOWN A PIPE TO SEVEN MINERS WHO WERE RESCUED LAST NIGHT AFTER BEING TRAPPED 23 HOURS.

THE DISASTER OCCURRED AFTER THE WALL OF A RESERVOIR COLLAPSED, SENDING THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF WATER AND MUD INTO THE MINE.

DRILLS WERE SOON RIGGED TO BEGIN THE DELICATE TASK OF BORING TO WHERE TO WHERE THE MINERS MIGHT HAVE BEEN TRAPPED. ANXIOUS FRIENDS AND RELATIVES MAINTAINED A NIGHT VIGIL AT THE MINEHEAD.

TROOPS, TOO, LENT A HAND. ANOTHER PROBLEM FACING RESCUE WORKERS WAS TO DRAIN THE FLOODED PITS INTO WORKED-OUT AREAS.
