The American twelve metre yacht Intrepid has sailed back into calculations to defend the America's Cup against the Australian challenger Southern Cross on September 10. The seven year old wooden yacht revived after four straight defeats at the hands of Courageous, an aluminium boat, during trials off Newport, Rhode Island on Tuesday (August 27). Courageous had won the first four races.
The latest trial was held under "america's Cup conditions"..... a healthy 15 to 17 knot wind was blowing over the course and the margin of victory was one minute 12 seconds.
Intrepid successfully defended the cup on the last two challenges in 1967 and 1970.
At the outset of the trials to find a defender for the Cup...which has been held by the United States since its inception in 1851....the aluminium yachts Courageous and Mariner were expected to be the finalists. But Mariner failed badly and now it's come down to the line with Intrepid showing her metal in the final stages under conditions usually associated with the Cup.
Since her first win on Tuesday, intrepid has won two more races to make the series four-three in favour of Courageous. Overall Courageous leads with nine wins from 17 races during the trial season.
