Background: INTRODUCTION: Moshe Dayan, Israel's most celebrated soldier-statesman has been buried at Nahalal Moshav, where he had lived most of his early life. His childhood was spent on the farming co-operative there. He was given a state funeral, but, at his own request, there were no eulogies spoken or shots fired over his grave.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Dayan's coffin, covered by the Israeli flag, lay briefly in state. In addition to many foreign delegates who filed past the bier, there were hundreds of ordinary Israelis, and some Arabs, with whom Mr. Dayan had close contact. The delegation from Egypt was led by Foreign Minister Boutros Ghali.
The coffin was carried by six generals to an open vehicle, and then to the burial site. In the cars following were Mr. Dayan's family, including his first wife Ruth. They were followed by the President of Israel, Mr. Yitzhak Navon, and his wife and the Prime Minister, Mr. Menachem Begin. The entire Israeli cabinet attended, with members of parliament of all parties. As the coffin approached the graveside a Rabbi recited Prayers for the Dead and Psalms.
Mr. Dayan's second wife, Raheb, stood by the grave near a military guard of honour. Among its members was Israeli Chief of Staff, Raful Eitan. Mr. Dayan's children, from his first marriage, sons Assaf and Udi and daughter Yael, watched as the coffin was lowered into the grave. A soldier held Mr. Dayan's many military decorations.
Mr. Dayan's daughter, Mrs. Yael Sion, a well-known novelist, was visibly distressed as she watched the ceremony.
Mr. Begin laid a wreath on the grave. One soldier, who had served with Mr. Dayan in the 1948 War, declared that the general had a magical quality of leadership.
