SYNOPSIS: An International Weightlifting competition was held in Gettysburg in the United States of America last weekend saw East European domination of the sport continue. Here Pavlasek of Czechoslovakia manages to lift two-hundred-and-seven-point-five kilograms in the Super Heavy Weight section.

But the East European competitors found some heavy competition from the west. Here Gourrier of France lifts one-hundred-and-eighty kilograms with an almost perfect clean and jerk.

A large crowd watched the event and their attendance was well rewarded as many of the competitors treated the competition as a warm up for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. United States competitor, Cameron, here lifted two hundred kilograms in the Heavyweight section.

The crowd showed its approval of such fantastic feats of strength.

Here the Southern European countries are represented by Lakovou of Greece. He managed to lift one-hundred-and-ninety-two-point-five kilograms in the Middle Heavyweight section with this clean and jerk.

Perhaps there are some future heavyweights here.

But the star of the competition was David Rigert of the Soviet Union who won a gold medal with this record breaking lift of two-hundred and twenty kilograms in the Middle Heavyweight section.

And he showed the mental concentration and athletic co-ordination that is needed to combine with great strength to be a truly great international weightlifter.

And when he was finished his team-mates ... and the crowd ... could not contain their appreciation of such a great effort.

For those of the sporting fraternity who regard weightlifting as an unexciting sport his display surely proved them wrong.
