  • Description

Senator Edmund Muskie, once the front runner for the Democratic Presidential nomination, announced in Washington last week (April 27) that he was withdrawing from the remaining 17 primary elections. However, the Senator from Maine said he was not withdrawing his candidacy completely.

Senator Muskie made the announcement following his defeat on Tuesday in the Massachusetts and Pennsylvania primaries. He told reporters he no longer had enough funds to continue his campaign. His finances had been deteriorating badly since the primary elections began in New Hampshire on March 7.

Despite his withdrawal from the primaries, Mr. Muskie said he will remain in the Presidential race. His supporters think he still has a chance of winning the Democratic nomination as a compromise candidate in the event of a deadlock at the convention next July in Miami, Florida.

Senator Muskie's decision to withdraw now leaves Senators George McGovern and Hubert Humphrey as the two leading contenders in the Democratic contest.
