  • Description

In view of the fact that it is rather dangerous for visitors to climb up the "holy rock" of the Acropolis from the Propylleae (entrance), Professor Spyros Marinatos, General Inspector of Greek Antiquities, recommended to the Archaeological Department of the Ministry to Prime Minster the turfing of the hill of the Acropolis. Marinatos' suggestion is still under study and won't materialize -- if agreed -- before Spring 1971. The turfing anyhow will eliminate the danger from the bare rocks of the hill which became these last decades very slippery causing tens of accidents to visitors every year.

Professor Marinatos, in cooperation with a UNO specially formed committee, examines also the possibility of restoring and reinforcing certain parts of the antique temples of the Acropolis, which -- according to certain information -- will crumble down in the next fifty years, unless a remedy is being found to the marble disease which struck the remnants of the greek civilization.
