  • Description

ISRAEL'S ARMED FORCES CELEBRATED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AS ARMOURED CORPS DAY, AND MARCHES AND PARADES WERE HELD THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. THE FESTIVAL MARKS THE DAY 13 YEARS AGO WHEN ISRAEL'S ARMOURED CORPS BROKE THROUGH EGYPTIAN LINES IN THE SINAI DESERT AT THE START OF THE 1956 SUEZ WAR.

FOR THE CORPS MEMBERS, IT ALSO MARKS THE DAY WHEN THEIR UNIT EMERGED FROM RELATIVE OBSCURITY TO BECOME THE SPEARHEAD OF ISRAEL'S GROUND FORCES.

DESPITE THE HIGH PRIORITY THE CORPS OBTAINED BY ITS ACTION, IT HAS BEEN UNABLE TO BUY NEW TANKS -- ITS HEAVY ARMOUR CONSISTS OF CAST-OFFS FROM OTHER ARMIES, PATTONS FROM THE UNITED STATES, CENTURIONS FROM BRITAIN, CAREFULLY REBUILT AND RECONDITIONED. ITS ONLY NEW EQUIPMENT IS A LIMITED CONSIGNMENT OF FRENCH AMX RECONNAISSANCE TANKS.

AT THIS PARADE "SOMEWHERE IN ISRAEL" THE ARMOURED CORPS COMMANDER, MAJOR GENERAL ADAN, PERSONALLY REVIEWED THE TROOPS, AND READ AN ORDER OF THE DAY WHICH WAS ALSO PROCLAIMED AT OTHER PARADES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

FOR OFFICERS AND NCO'S WHO HAD JUST FINISHED COURSES, THE OCCASION ALSO SERVED AS A PASSING-OUT PARADE.

IN HIS ORDER, THE GENERAL PAID TRIBUTE TO CORPS MEMBERS WHO HAD FALLEN IN BATTLE SINCE THE 1948 WAR. "LET US REMEMBER" HE SAID, "THAT IN THEIR DEATH THEY BEQUEATHED ON US THE DUTY OF CONTINUING TO PROTECT THE STATE AND THE SAFETY OF ITS CITIZENS".
