  • Description

A NEW YORK STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION PHYSICIAN, DR. EDWIN A. CAMPBELL HAS DENIED SAYING THAT WORLD HEAVY WEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION JOE FRAZIER MIGHT HAVE A HEAD INJURY FOLLOWING HIS 15-ROUND BOUT WITH MUHAMMAD ALI AT MADISON SQUARE GARDENS.

FRAZIER ENTERED HOSPITAL IN PHILADELPHIA ON MARCH 15, A WEEK AFTER THE TITLE FIGHT, SUFFERING FROM HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. HIS PERSONAL PHYSICIAN, DR. JAMES C. GIUFFRE, SAID YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THAT FRAZIER HAD THE AILMENT KNOWN AS "ATHLETE'S KIDNEY", WHICH WAS NOT UNCOMMON AMONG SWIMMERS, BASKETBALL PLAYERS, BOXERS AND RUNNERS. THE BLOOD PRESSURE WAS A BY-PRODUCT OF THIS CONDITION, HE SAID.

IN VIEW OF CONTINUING SPECULATION ON FRAZIER'S HEALTH AND FUTURE CAREER, WE ARE SERVICING THIS INTERVIEW HE RECORDED WITH A LOCAL SPORTS REPORTER IN PHILADELPHIA ON WEDNESDAY (24 MARCH).
