Liberia's President William Tolbert, opening his first international Conference as President in Monrovia's new E.J. Roye Memorial Building, on Monday (20 September) exhorted the 14 countries of West Africa to become self-sufficient in rice production before the end of this decade
The Liberian leader stressed this need when opening the First Governing Council Meeting of the West African Rice Development Association.
President Tolbert also intended Liberia should strive towards this goal. He told delegates Liberia spent 9.7 million dollars in 1970 on imports of rice, money which night have been used in other avenues of development if the country had been able to grow all its own rice.
