Background: In the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin were re-elected on Wednesday (18 April) as the country's President and Prime Minister. A meeting of the Supreme Soviet, the country's parliament, voted in favour of a motion put forward by the Communist Party's Central Committee to renew Mr. Brezhnev and Mr. Kosygin's mandate.
Leonid Brezhnov went on the day that in the unswerving implementation of the programme for economic and social development that had been worked out by the Party the USSR Supreme Soviet is obliged to constantly think about securing peace in the world to enable the communist construction in this country, to strengthen its might. He voiced firm confidence that the Supreme Soviet and its Presidium would continue to persistently work for peace on this planet in keeping with the Leninist principles of the Party's foreign policy. With this in view, he said, we shall have to still more actively cooperate with representative agencies of fraternal socialist states, with parliaments and peace-loving public in all countries in the world, and to give active support to nations who wage struggle for their national and social liberation.
Head of the Soviet Government Alexei Kosygin then read out a statement that the USSR Council of Ministers considered their duties done and that they resign to the newly elected parliament. Leonid Brezhnev moved that the session of the USSr Supreme Soviet again appoint Alexei Kosygin Prime Minister and ask him to suggest the composition of the government.
