  • Description

The softening of Communist demands for direct participation in any new government in Italy has built up the chances that the Prime Minister designate Signor Ugo La Malfa, can form the first non-Christian Democratic government for more than thirty years. The veteran Republican leader was asked to form a government after the outgoing Prime Minister, Signor Giulio Andreotti, failed to form a new administration earlier in February.

SYNOPSIS: With the communists dropping their demands for representation in any new Cabinet and pledging their support for a widely representative government presided over by Signor La Malfa he went on Wednesday (28 February) for talks with President Sandro Pertini. Afterwards, Signor La malfa told newsmen outside the Christian Democrat headquarters in Rome he had listened with interest to President Pertini's suggestions on the structure of a new government. He would consider these ideas and give a reply at a later date. Meanwhile, he said, he had agreed with the President to observe the utmost secrecy on what they had talked about. If he does form a new administration, Signor La Malfa will be the first non-Christian Democrat to become Prime Minister since 1945.

Should he fail, observers believe the most likely result would be an early election. Reuters news agency, reporting from Rome on Wednesday, said Signor La Malfa's chance of forming a new government were widely described as remote.
