After months of demonstrations the Shah has left Iran. He arrived in Egypt en route?

  • Description

After months of demonstrations the Shah has left Iran. He arrived in Egypt en route to the United States on Tuesday (16 January). In Teheran thousands took to the streets in celebration. Many of the anti-Shah demonstrations had been encouraged by the Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Khomeiny, living in exile in a Paris suburb. The Ayatollah greeted the news of the Shah's departure with a statement that he would soon set up a provisional government in Iran. The Shah left after the new civilian government of Prime Minister Shapur Bakhtiar won a vote of confidence from the country's lower house of Parliament.

SYNOPSIS: A Khomeiny spokesman talked about the Shah's departure from outside the Ayatollah's home in Neauphle-le-Chatteau.

Newsmen have besieged the small village since the Ayatollah arrived from Iraq three months ago. He says he will return to Iran at the 'proper time', but has not been specific, says his forthcoming provisional government will form a popularly-elected constituent assembly to ratify a new Iranian constitution.

The Ayatollah called on all groups in Iran to set aside their differences and join together to reconstruct the country. He said the important thing about the Shah's departure was that it spelt the end of foreign domination in the country. He has also rejected the new government of Dr. Bakhtiar, because he says it was appointed by the Shah. But after he had won his vote of confidence, Dr. Bakhtiar was in conciliatory mood when asked by newsmen about relations with the Ayatollah.
