    Background: ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT FIGHTERS FOR ALGERIAN INDEPENDENCE, COLONEL ABBAS, WAS TRAGICALLY KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT NEAR ZERALDA ON WEDNESDAY (JANUARY 17). COLONEL ABBAS, WHOSE REAL NAME WAS BOUDJEMANE AHMED, WAS A CLOSE FRIEND OF PRESIDENT HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE.

    COLONEL ABBAS, COMMANDANT OF THE CHERCHELL MILITARY ACADEMY, WAS KILLED INSTANTLY WHEN HIS CAR CRASHED 18 MILES (30 KILOMETRES) WEST OF ALGIERS. AS SOON AS HE WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ACCIDENT, PRESIDENT BOUMEDIENNE WENT TO THE SCENE WITH OTHER OFFICIALS.

    YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) PRESIDENT BOUMEDIENNE AND OTHER ALGERIAN LEADERS ATTENDED A RELIGIOUS SERVICE AT THE GREAT MOSQUE OF ALGIERS IN MEMORY OF COLONEL ABBAS.

    DURING HIS YEARS AS AN ALGERIAN LIBERATION FIGHTER, COLONEL ABBAS HAS TO TAKE REFUGE IN MOROCCO. HE RETURNED LATER TO BECOME ONE OF THE CHIEF MILITARY OFFICERS IN THE NEW REGIME.

    COLONEL ABBAS WAS MARRIED WITH SEVEN CHILDREN.
