  • Description

Portuguese Communist leader Dr. Alvaro Cunhal reaffirmed his party's unswerving loyalty to the Soviet Union in a speech to a massive anniversary rally in Lisbon on Friday (5 March).

Dr. Cunhal said the party would never let itself be brow-beaten into criticising the Kremlin.

In his speech before 12,000 supporters celebrating the 55th anniversary of the party's foundation, Dr. Cunhal denounced what he called a colossal effort by reactionary imperialist forces to set Communist parties n capitalist countries against the Soviet bloc.

Dr. Cunhal, who was clearly referring to the controversy involving opposition to the Kremlim from the French, Italian and Spanish Communist parties, led the Portuguese delegation to the recent Soviet Communist Party congress in Moscow.

The Portuguese Communist Party has traditionally been one of the most pro-Moscow parties outside the Soviet bloc and was the only West European party to support the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
