  • Description

The President of drought-stricken Mauritania, President Moktar Ould Daddah, has been on a brief visit to Gabon for discussions with President Omar Bongo.

SYNOPSIS: President Ould Daddah arrived in Libreville on Wednesday (22 March) and was met by President Bongo and senior officials. The purpose of his 24-hour visit was not formally announced but observers believe the talks between the two leaders centred on Mauritania's two major problems-the drought which could lead to famine and the Western Sahara conflict. President Bongo is the current Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which has organised a summit meeting on the Sahara issue.

President Ould Daddah announced in Libreville that the national "reunification" of Mauritania was definitive and could not be made the object of negotiations or discussion. However, Mauritania would attend any future OAU summit on the tension in the Western Saharan sub-region, he said. Mauritania also seeks OAU aid to relieve the effects of the present Sahel drought which experts fear could be as disastrous as that of 1969-74. After his discussions, the Mauritanian leader left for the Congo.
