Background: FROM JAKARTA, VISNEWS BRINGS YOU THIS EXCLUSIVE CLIP ON PRESIDENT SUKARNO AT THE MERDEKA PALACE ON MARCH 10, HARDLY 24 HOURS AFTER AN INDONESIAN MIG 17 PILOT MACHINEGUNNED AND STRAFED THE PALACE.

THE PILOT, NOW IDENTIFIED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT DANIEL ALEXANDER MAUKAR, TOOK OFF FROM JAKARTA'S KEMAJORAN AIRPORT IN A SQUADRON OF FOUR FOR TRAINING, BUT PEELED OFF FROM THE FORMATION AND DIVED AT THE PRESIDENT'S WHITE-PILLARED MERDEKA PALACE AT 600 MILES PER HOUR. BULLETS FROM HIS GUNS WHISTLED DOWN A WIDE PICTURE-LINED CORRIDOR OF THE BUILDING, SHATTERED GIANT CRYSTAL CHANDELIERS AND WOUNDED TWO AT THE PALACE - A SENTRY, AND A PAINTER.

THE PILOT ALSO ATTACKED THE PRESIDENT'S SUMMER PALACE AT BOGOR, SOME 30 MILES FROM JAKARTA, AND A CROWDED VILLAGE NEAR THE HARBOUR TANJUNG PRIOK. IN ALL 17 PEOPLE WERE WOUNDED, FIVE SERIOUSLY.

PRESIDENT SUKARNO WAS AT THAT TIME ATTENDING A SESSION OF THE SUPREME ADVISORY COUNCIL IN THE CABINET BUILDING IN PALACE GROUNDS. HIS CHILDREN WERE IN THE PALACE BUT NO MEMBER OF THE FAMILY WAS HURT.

INSPITE OF THE ATTACK, BUSINESS CONTINUED AS USUAL ... PRESIDENT SUKARNO ATTENDED THE SUPREME ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING THE NEXT DAY (MAR.10) AND APPEARED UNRUFFLED BY THIS SECOND ATTEMPT ON HIS LIFE. THE FIRST WAS A GRENADE ATTACK AT A SCHOOL IN DJAKARTA SUBURB IN NOVEMBER 1957.

AS HE EMERGED FROM THE CABINET BUILDING IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE GROUNDS HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY RUSLAN ABDULGANI, DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF THE SUPREME ADVISORY COUNCIL. IN HIS USUAL EBULLIENT MOOD, SUKARNO WAVED TO WAITING PRESSMEN AND ASKED WHY SO MANY HAD TURNED UP! IT WAS THE TYPICAL SUKARNO METHOD OF IGNORING INCONVENIENT INCIDENTS.

LATEST REPORTS FROM JAKARTA SAID THE PILOT HAS BEEN DETAINED AND IS UNDER INTERROGATION, AND THAT HE WOULD BE TRIED BY AN AIR-FORCE COURT-MARTIAL.
