  • Description

UNITED NATIONS AIRCRAFT IN THE CONGO, STRAINED BY LONG SERVICE IN EXTREMES OF TROPICAL CLIMATE, ARE BEING OVERHAULED AT AIRFIELDS ACROSS THE BORDER IN RHODESIA.

CONGO FACILITIES ARE OFTEN INADEQUATE, AND A REGULAR SIGHT IN RECENT MONTHS HAS BEEN GROUPS OF PLANES BEARING THE UN SYMBOL LINED UP ON THE TARMAC AT BULAWAYO AIRPORT IN SOUTHERN RHODESIA. OTHERS WERE UNDER VARIOUS STAGES OF REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE BY RHODESIAN MECHANICS. MOST SPARE PARTS ARE FLOWN IN FROM OVERSEAS, ALTHOUGH ONE BATCH OF RADIAL ENGINES IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN FROM THE CONGO.

THE AIRCRAFT - MAINLY C46 AND DC4 TRANSPORTS - ARE SUPPLIED BY COUNTRIES AS FAR APART AS THE UNITED STATES AND LUXEMBOURG, PANAMA AND SWEDEN. CONSEQUENTLY IT IS OFTEN IMPRACTICAL, OR UNSAFE, TO FLY THEM BACK TO THEIR HOME BASES FOR REPAIRS.
