  • Description

A NEW UNITED STATES NEWSPAPER WAS BORN YESTERDAY (MONDAY) 140 DAYS LATE. THE WORLD JOURNAL TRIBUNE, RESULT OF A MERGER BETWEEN THE JOURNAL AMERICAN, THE WORLD TELEGRAM AND THE HERALD TRIBUNE, WAS DUE TOP APPEAR ON APRIL 25 BUT WAS DELAYED BY THE LONGEST STRIKE IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN DAILY NEWSPAPERS.

THE FIRST EDITION WAS 80 PAGES LONG AND NEARLY A MILLION COPIES WERE PRINTED. THE MAYOR, MR. JOHN LINDSAY. WAS TO PRESS A BUTTON A 9 A.M. TO START THE PRESSES ROLLING, BUT MECHANICAL DIFFICULTIES DELAYED THE START FOR AN HOUR AND HE HAD TO LEAVE FOR WASHINGTON BEFORE THE CEREMONY COULD BEGIN.

BEFORE LEAVING HE TOLD THE EDITOR, MR. FRANK CONIFF, THAT NO INDUSTRY COULD LONG ENDURE VERY LENGTHY STRIKES, AND HE PROMISED TO DO EVERYTHING HE COULD FOR NEWSPAPERS.

THE MERGED CORPORATION HAD PLANNED TO PUBLISH THE HERALD TRIBUNE AS A MORNING NEWSPAPER AND THE WORLD JOURNAL TRIBUNE AS ITS AFTERNOON PAPER, BUT THE LONG STRIKE DESTROYED THE IDEA OF THE MORNING PAPER.

NEW YORK NOW HAS TWO AFTERNOON PAPERS -- THE OTHER IS THE NEW YORK POST.
