Background: Americans went to the polls Tuesday (3 November) in numbers that indicated a heavy turnout. Advance estimates had foreseen a total vote of more than 70 million, which would be a record for the United States.
The weather was pleasant in the east and over most of the country, with a band of showers through the middle west. Good weather normally brings a heavy turnout.
The polls in New York opened at 6 A.M. and lines were formed at the voting places before that time in many neighborhoods.
There were the usual complaints of unfair tactics in certain areas made by both sides.
