  • Description

Algeria is expected to be the subject of President de Gaulle's Press conference Sept 5. He is expected to outline new policies which could bring about a rapprochement in Algeria.

Meanwhile the Algerian war continues, in spite of frequent unofficial contacts between the politicians of both sides, and in Algeria itself, France is pressing forward with modernisation schemes.

These cover agriculture, and irrigation is bringing new fertility to many areas previously barren because of their complete dryness.

"Societe General de l'Hydraulique", a French company specialising in water installations, has undertaken to irrigate very large areas so that thousands of acres of soil could be used in the normal way. Water is used mainly for the cultivation of cereals, but it represents also a source of life for sheep herds which were decimated every year by draughts.

Near Perregeaux, in the province of Oranie, 40,000 acres of soil are being irrigated. It includes orange groves covering 34,000 acres, olive groves of no less than 2,200 acres and 3,800 acres of orchards growing apricots, apples and medlars.

Irrigation enables the growers to produce from 22,000 lbs. to 44,000 lbs. for every 2 acres of soil so treated. With a view to facilitating the scheme, the water company has built a dam and a reservoir of 60,000,000 cubic metres capacity for storing water used only during the driest period. A network of canals covering over 300 kilometres has been built, producing 7,200 litres of water per second.

In the area known as "Hauts-Plateaux" where only alfalfa grass grows, the only possibility is to keep herds of sheep, amounting normally to between 300 and 400 animals for each herd. In this region, cattle often die due to lack of water. A network of wells every 10 kilometres has been created over a region which is of no less than 57,000, square kilometres. These wells are dug at a depth of between 60 and 200 metres.
