  • Description

A group of Bulgarian officials has been visiting the Congo to discuss bilateral relations. The country, which is currently faced with increasing economic instability, relies heavily on foreign financial and technical aid; particularly from East European countries.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Nicolas Okongo, a leading member of the Congolese Military Committee Party, was at Brazzaville airport to greet the Bulgarian delegation, which was headed by Mr. Peko Takov -- the Vice-President of the Bulgarian State Council. The two countries have a history of close ties. In 1970 they agreed on several cultural exchange programmes to reach better understanding in the arts, and in June of this year they agreed on closer economic ties.

Also at the airport were the ambassadors of Cuba, the Soviet Union and Rumania. The Congo relies heavily on technical and military aid from socialist countries. East Germany recently presented the Congolese with gifts worth more than 2 million U.S. dollars, and diplomatic sources indicate that there are more than 700 foreign nationals working in the Congo, many of them as military advisors, including a large Bulgarian contingent.
