Background: The United Nations Secretary General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, arrived in the capital of Zaire, Kinshasa, on Saturday (8 May) on an official visit to the country. He was greeted at the airport by Zaire's Foreign and International Cooperation Minister, Mr. Nguza Karl I Bond.

During his short visit, Dr. Waldheim had talks with President Mobutu Sese Seko, who gave a dinner in his honour on Saturday evening.

Shortly after his arrival, Dr. Waldheim spoke to newsmen about the fourth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development which he had opened in Kenya on Wednesday (5 May). He described the conference as very important, and emphasised that the countries attending had expressed every intention of overcoming their trade and development problems through cooperation.

Dr. Waldheim's talks with President Mobutu were expected to deal with the results of the U.N.C.T.A.D. conference, and the problems of southern Africa.

He admitted to newsmen that he thought the situation in southern African was very serious, though he expressed his own belief that there would eventually be black majority rule in the area. He still hoped the situation would be resolved by peaceful means.

Concerning the large numbers of refugees in southern Africa, he said that he was sorry there had been so little progress in relieving the tragedy, and called for vigorous action to find a solution.

SYNOPSIS: Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, was the next port of call for Dr. Kurt Waldheim, the Secretary General of the United Nations, after his visit to Kenya where he had opened the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Shortly after arriving on saturday, Dr. Waldheim told newsmen that the conference in Kenya was very important and offered the countries participating a chance to solve problems through cooperation.

On Saturday evening, the Secretary General attended a dinner given in his honour by President Mobutu Sese Seko. During his short visit, the talks Dr. Waldheim was scheduled to have with President Mobutu, were expected to cover the Kenyan conference and the problems of southern Africa. Earlier in the day at the airport, Dr. Waldheim had told the newsmen that he thought the situation in southern Africa was very serious.
