  • Description

Campaigning has peaked for the Kenyan General elections set down for Thursday (8 November). More than eight hundred candidates have filed nomination papers to fill the one hundred and fifty eight seats in the National Assembly. After the elections President Daniel Arap Moi is expected to shuffled his Cabinet widely to fade the imprint it has carried of the country's first President Jomo Kenyatta, who died fifteen months ago.

SYNOPSIS: Through the streets of Dagoretti, near nairobi, cruises a motorcade supporting Mr. George Githii, a former editor-in-chief of the Nations newspapers in Nairobi. Mr. githii is contesting the Dagoretti constituency against Mr. Njoroge Mungai, who held portfolios Affairs in Jomo Kenyatta's government.

A candidate in the Langata constituency is Mr. Philip Leakey, a member of a noted and accomplished kenyan family. He is the only white candidate in the entire field throughout the country. Mr. Leakey is a facile linguist, easily qualifying for the stipulation that all candidates must be proficient in English and Kiswahili. Like most candidates, he found the three-weeks' campaigning period a welter of rushed meals, tight speaking schedules and strain on the larynx.

All candidates have to be sponsored by the ruling party -- the Kenya African National Union (KANU). Among those the party refused to endorse was Mr. Oginga Odinga, a former vice-president, and opponent of Mr. Moi's government.

A candidate for the Mathare constituency in Nairobi is the Foreign Minister, Dr. Munyua Waiyaki who is challenged by the mayor of nairobi, Mr. Andrew Ngumba. Dr. Waiyaki has a strong record of campaigning for the poor in the Mathare slums.
