  • Description

The Greek Premier, Constantine Karamanlis, arrived in Egypt on Wednesday (21 January) for a two-day official visit which is seen as part of Greece's efforts to improve its relations with Arab countries and expand its trade and economic links in the area.

It is the first time Mr. Karamanlis has visited an Arab country since he assumed power in 1974.

He and the Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, were expected to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East, including the question of Palestinian refugees.

The two, who last met during a brief stop-over by President Sadat at Athens airport last June, will also discuss the Cyprus problem and other international issues.

Greece and Egypt have traditional links and there is a large Greek community in Egypt. The Presidents are expected to discuss the question of the compensation sought by Greeks who left Egypt during the Suez canal crisis in the mid-1950s.
