  • Description

From the sedate UN Security Council chamber to rollicking, roaring Coney Island funland is a long step, but US Vice-Presidential candidate Henry Cabot Lodge took it, September 5 - to campaign for November 9 elections. Accompanied by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, another infrequent visitor to Coney Island's swings and gimmicks, Lodge went by helicopter for the second day of his campaign, which started up in the Gatskill Mountains, among holidaying New Yorkers.

This 'Meet the people' visit to New York's playground was a 'howling success'. Shouting milling weekenders nearly swamped the Republican Vice-presidential candidate's party. And mounted police were of little help. But munching on a hotdog from universally famous Nathan's Hotdog Emporium, and sipping soda through a straw between times, Lodge and Rockefeller, coatless, tieless, and breathless, had the outward appearance of enjoying themselves.

After his first two days of campaigning Lodge remarked "You get a lot of fresh air in this business" - it probably was a change from the smoke-filled Security Chamber.
