  • Description

An emergency meeting has been held in the Jordanian capital of Amman between Christian and Moslem leaders to discuss the case of the Aksa mosque in the old city of Jerusalem.

The conference decided to send telegrams to Arab heads of state; the United Nations Secretary General, and religious organisations warning of the alleged threat to Jerusalem's holy places.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was held at the offices of the Islamic Congress. Representing the Roman Catholic Church was Bishop Nemeh El Samaan, and the meeting was presided over by the Jordanian Minister for Islamic Affairs, Mr. Kamel Elsharif. Mr. Elsharif spoke of a new Israeli Government decision to put the religious places in Jerusalem under the control of the Rabbi's Council. He said those attending the meeting were faced with a new situation.

At the meeting it was claimed that resumed archaeological excavations were endangering the Aksa Mosque, and the situation might extend to other holy places. The meeting insisted that Jerusalem be returned to Arab control.
