Prior to returning to Paris the' good offices' envoys,Mr.Harold Beeley of Great Britain and Mr.Robert Murphy of the U.S.A.,were invited to a dinner party at President Bourguiba's residence.
Other guests included the American Ambassador,Mr.Lewis Jones, and his wife; the British Ambassador,Mr.Malcom;the Vice President of Tunisia, and the Tunisian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
Before leaving for Paris,Mr.Beeley said that the recent negotiations have been encouraging and that progress had been made,in bringing about a reduction in tension between France and Tunisia.
Tomorrow these two mediators will inform the French Prime Minister, M.Gaillard and the Foreign Minister,M.Pineau,of the new proposal put forward by President Bourguiba regarding the Bizerta issue. He has agreed that the status of this French military base should be settled at a later stage, providing the French Government accept the principle of Tunisian sovereignty over the base. This proposal is in part a compromise, for hitherto President Bourguiba has demanded the French agreement to the principle of evacuating Bizerta before he would negotiate with them.
