    IVORY COAST PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY SPENT A BUSY DAY IN AND AROUND TUNIS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FULFILLING OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENTS. THE PRESIDENT ARRIVED IN TUNISIA ON MONDAY (18 MARCH) FOR A WEEK-LONG OFFICIAL VISIT.

    FIRST STOP FOR THE PRESIDENT WAS SEDJOUMI, NEAR TUNIS. HERE, ACCOMPANIED BY M. BAHI LADGHAM, TUNISIAN SECRETARY OF STATE FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE, M. HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY LAID A WREATH AT THE MONUMENT TO THE MARTYRS.

    AFTERWARDS THE PRESIDENT, TOGETHER WITH TUNISIAN PRESIDENT HABIB BOURGUIBA, INAUGURATED A NEW MARBLE FACTORY NEAR THE CAPITAL.

    THE TWO LEADERS WERE MET ON THEIR ARRIVAL AT THE FACTORY BY ITS GENERAL MANAGER, M. ALI MHENNI, AND M. AHMED BEN SAJA, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR PLANNING. AFTER CUTTING A RIBBON DECLARING THE MARBLE WORKS OPEN THEY WERE TAKEN ON A TOUR OF THE BUILDING.

    FROM THE NEW M. HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY NEXT TURNED HIS ATTENTION TO THE VERY OLD -- PUNIC AND ROMAN REMAINS IN 2,700-YEAR-OLD CARTHAGE. THERE HE VISITED THE RUINS OF ROMAN VILLAS, A ROMAN THEATRE, AND SEASIDE ROMAN BATHS.

    IN THE EVENING BOTH PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY AND PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA, ACCOMPANIED BY THEIR WIVES, ATTENDED A FOLKLORE FESTIVAL IN TUNIS. THERE TOO WERE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, MEMBERS OF THE IVORY COAST DELEGATION AND M. CHEDLY KLIBI, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND HIS WIFE.
