  • Description

After a memorial service on Friday (28 August) in Buenos Aires for Argentinean Labour Leader Jose Alonso, who was machine-gunned to death near his home in the City on Thursday, he was finally buried on Saturday (29 August).

The funeral procession, which contained many leading figures in the Argentine Labour world, passed the headquarters of Alonso's union, the 30,000-strong Garment Workers, on its way to the cemetery.

Hundreds of people watched the long procession of cars wind its way through the streets of Buenos Aires, and many of them threw flowers.

The murder of Alonso was the second of a Union Official in Argentina in fourteen months. Augusto Vandor, head of the Metalworkers' Union was hot dead at his Union headquarters in June last year.

Fifty-seven-years-old Alsonso was gunned down by two men when his car was intercepted and stopped by three other vehicles shortly after he left home on his way to Union Headquarters.

It was feared that the killing could spark a nation-wide protest strike. Moves are under way to strengthen security arrangements around other Union leaders following the murder.
