  • Description

INTRODUCTION Nine nations in western and central Africa have decided to form a new regional economic grouping -- a maritime organisation.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates from Cameroun, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Liberia, Niger, Zaire, Ghana and Senegal have been meeting at a ministerial committee conference in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, to discuss the new organisation. Their plans were outlined by M.Mamadou Diop, Senegal's Minister of Public Works, Town Planning and Transport. The meeting was in preparation for a major ministerial conference in Ghana next month.

The new organisation will be officially launched at the meeting in Accra.

The main object of the African maritime grouping is to coordinate efforts of the member states in development of their merchant navy and port facilities. The grouping will be a permanent replacement for the annual maritime conference - of the same countries - a preparatory committee set up a year ago.
