  • Description

Eighteen year-old Evonne Goolagong, the brightest hope among Australia's up and coming women tennis players, had little difficulty today (June 23) winning her first match in her first Wimbledon appearance.

Miss Goolagong, tipped as a future Wimbledon champion, bundled out Odile De Roubin of France 6-1, 6-2 in the first round match on court 4.

Part Aborigine Miss Goolagong first came to notice when she won the Australian Junior Title. She won it again in 1970, and reached the quarter final of the Australian Open Championships before being beaten by another Australian, the powerful Mrs Margaret Court.

Miss Goolagong is spending her first summer abroad to take part in Wimbledon 1970.
