  • Description

The real battle for the British Open Golf Championship on the final day at Muirfield, Scotland, on Saturday (July 15) took place on the last two greens. It was a fight between three men -- Tony Jacklin of Britain, defending Champion Lee Trevino of the United States, and fellow-countryman Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus, playing two holes ahead of partners Trevino and Jacklin, finished with a 67 -- five under par. Jacklin and Trevino reached the 17th both six under par -- and Trevino's incredible chip shot from just off the edge of the green, together with Jacklin's disasterous three putt for six, put the American in the lead. At the 18th, he needed two putts or less to retain his title -- and he didn't make any mistakes.
