  • Description

URGENT REPAIR WORK STARTED MORNING (17 JUNE) ON AN OIL PIPELINE NEAR LITTLE ADEN WHICH WAS BLOWN UP DURING THE NIGHT. UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS, EXPLOSIVE CHARGES WERE USED TO FRACTURE THE TWENTY MILE (32 KMS) LONG PIPELINE FEEDING ADEN FROM A REFINERY AT LITTLE ADEN.

EXPERTS EXPECT IT WILL TAKE THREE TO FOUR DAYS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE TO THE UNDERGROUND PIPES. A MAIN VALVE HOUSED IN REINFORCED CONCRETE ABOUT TEN MILES OUT ADEN WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED.

THE MAIN LITTLE ADEN TO ADEN ROAD WAS FLOODED WITH OIL FOR ABOUT 400 YARDS (361 METRES). IN PLACES IT WAS UP TO EIGHT INCHES (20 CENTIMETRES) DEEP.

CARS AND LORRIES GOT BOGGED DOWN AS THEY TRIED TO AVOID IT BY DRIVING THROUGH ADJOINING DESERT AND MANY WERE STRANDED.
