Background: On Sunday (19 December) 16 Basque nationalists began a hunger strike in Bilbao. The protesters were calling for amnesty for prisoners and political exiles.
The demonstrators not only called for the amnesty of Basque political prisoners but all political prisoners in Spain. They staged the protest in a small church in Bilbao. A spokesman for the group said the strike demonstrated once again the will of the Basque people, not forgetting their abstention in the recent Spanish constitutional referendum. He pointed out that in spite of the Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations, the Basques were still being suppressed.
Inside the church, the demonstrators sang protest songs. They said they could not celebrate festivals -- like Christmas -- as a nationality as long as their "rights were not recognised", and families were separated.
