  • Description

Pollution is ruining the ways and beaches of one of the world's major tourist resorts, Rio de Janeiro, and authorities in the city are doing little about it.

The city, once famous for its year-round sun and sandy beaches, is famous for another reason now.....water off its beaches has up to 900 times the pollution level considered safe for humans in California.

The figure was given by the Brazilian Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Paulo Noguaira Neto, who classed the beaches of Rio as ranging from bad to terrible. He said bathers faced grave health risks.

The figures caused a scandal in the city but hardly anything has been done, except for the starting of another publicity campaign to attract more tourists.

Rio de Janeiro now has a population of about five million and yet less than ten percent of its sewa???e receives any treatment at all. Most flows in open ditches across the beaches into the famous bays around the city.

With the sewage flows all kinds of trash such as bottles, tins, plastic containers, chunks of wood and even old shoes.

A dead cow was washed up on the beach in front of an international hotel recently and hydrofoil ferries can no longer run at full speed because of floating trash, the hit a bed several weeks ago.

The problem is accentuated by 6,000 factories releasing their waste directly into the sea, and the ???-bright beaches are now a dirty grey.

The biggest effort being made to ??? the problem is the building by the Government of giant ???bes to carry the affluent offshore. One such pipeline has been a fixture on Ipanema beach for the past six years, but critics say it will be outmoded within 20 years.

Meanwhile, the 40 million people who use Rio de Janeiro's beaches each year will continue to run the risk of catching all the diseases associated with raw sewage and industrial waste.
