King Hussein of Jordan had talks with U.S. President Jimmy Carter in Washington on Monday (25 April) and afterwards appeared more optimistic about achieving a peace settlement in the Middle East.
SYNOPSIS: King Hussein is the third Middle East leader to visit the White House since President Carter took office. Initially he said he was not hopeful about the chance of achieving peace this year, but a White House statement after the talks said the two leaders had agreed the time is right for a major international drive to reconvene the Geneva peace conference. King Hussein also met with the Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance and the two men talked to journalists after their talks.
