    THE AGA KHAN, SPIRITUAL LEADER OF 50-MILLION ISMAILIS, AND PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY ON THURSDAY (MARCH 16) OPENED THE FIRST JUTE-SACK FACTORY IN THE IVORY COAST.

    THE FACTORY, ABOUT SIX MILES (10 KMS) FROM ABIDJAN, IS FINANCED AND OWNED BY THE ISMAILI SECTS' INDUSTRIAL AND PROMOTION SERVICES, THE PAKISTAN PEOPLE'S JUTE MILLS AND THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT.

    THE FACTORY COAST ABOUT ONE-MILLION POUNDS (STERLING) TO SET UP. PRODUCTION IS EXPECTED TO REACH FIVE-AND-A-HALF MILLIONS SACKS A YEAR WITH EMPLOYEES UP TO 600. AT PRESENT, 150 IVORIENS AND THREE EUROPEANS ARE WORKING THERE.

    ALL THE MACHINERY IS BRITISH AND IT'S UNDER A TOTAL ROOFED ARE OF 9,600 SQUARE YARDS.

    THE JUTE SACK FACTORY IS THE SECOND ISMAILI INVESTMENT IN THE IVORY COAST WHICH HAS BEEN OPENED BY THE AGA KHAN. IN 1965, HE INAUGURATED THE NOUR-EL-HAYAT (LIGHT OF LIFE) APARTMENT AND OFFICE BUILDING IN ABIDJAN.

    AND ANOTHER IS DEVELOPING ALONE WITH THE FACTORY; THE GROWING OF HIBISCUS. THE RAW JUTE IS AT PRESENT IMPORTED FROM EAST PAKISTAN BUT LOCAL EXPERIMENTS HAVE PROVED SUCCESSFUL. EVENTUALLY IVORIEN HIBISCUS WILL TOTALLY REPLACE IMPORTED JUTE AT THE FACTORY.
