  • Description

SINGAPORE IS A TRANSIT POINT FOR BRITISH TROOPS FROM EAST MALAYSIA. SINCE THE ENDING OF INDONESIAN CONFRONTATION AGAINST MALAYSIA THREE MONTHS AGO, BRITISH TROOPS HAVE STEADILY BEEN WITHDRAWING FROM THE BORNEO STATES. TODAY (TUESDAY), THE LAST OF THE BRITISH TROOPS ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE FROM TAWAU, EASTERN SABAH, ABOARD THE TROOPSHIP 'AUBY'.

THE TROOPS, OF BATTALION STRENGTH, ARE MEMBERS OF THE FIRST ROYAL HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT. THEY HAVE BEEN SERVING IN SABAH AND SARAWAK AT THE HEIGHT OF THE THREE-YEAR-LONG CONFRONTATION.

NOW THE ROLE OF DEFENCE IN EASTERN MALAYSIA HAS BEEN LEFT TO MALAYSIAN TROOPS. THEY HAVE BEEN MOVING IN SINCE THE START OF THE WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH TROOPS FROM THERE.

BY CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR, SOME 5,000 BRITISH TROOPS WILL HAVE RETURNED TO THE UNITED KINGDOM AFTER SERVING IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO.

MEANWHILE, AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TROOPS HAVE ALREADY BEEN WITHDRAWN. AT PRESENT, ONLY 3,000 TROOPS ARE REMAINING BEHIND. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE PULLED OUT BY EARLY NEXT YEAR.
