    A BUNCH OF TEN TOOK AN EARLY LEAD AND MAINTAINED IT TILL TOWARDS THE END OF THE DAY.THEN VAN CONINGSLOO OF BELGIUM, JEAN STABLINSKI OF FRANCE, MALIEPAARD OF HOLLAND AND GILBERT DESMET OF BELGIUM GOT AHEAD TO TAKE THE FIRST STAGE IN THAT ORDER.

    THE TOUR IS IN FOUR STAGES.TODAY'S WAS TO WELLIN IN SOUTHERN BELGIUM - A DISTANCE OF 209 KMS (ABOUT 125 MILES) AND THE WINNER COVERED IT IN FIVE HOURS FIVE MINUTES 22 SECONDS.

    BELGIUM'S FORMER WORLD CHAMPION RIK VAN LOOY, BACKED BY A STRONG TEAM, INCLUDING ARMAND DESMET, IS CONSIDERED FAVOURITE.HE FACES STRONG COMPETITION FROM STABLINSKI WHO LAST WEEKEND WON THE TOUR OF FRANKFURT, AND FROM A NUMBER OF TOP PROFESSIONALS LIKE GILBERT AND VAN CONINGSLOO.

    BUT FRANCE'S ANQUETIL AND POULIDOR ARE NOT COMPETING THIS TIME, NOR IS SPAIN'S BAHAMONTES.
