    Outsider 'Birum' won first prize of GBP20,000 at France's top horse race of the year - the Paris Grand Prix over one mile seven furlongs at Longchamp at June 28.

    Owned by Andre Belinguier, ridden by Louis Flavien, 'Birum' led by a short head in a photo-finish over 'Le Loup Garou', owner Count d'Audiffret-Pasquier, rider Bernard Margueritte.

    All 18 horses in the race - the 92nd - were three year olds and French.

    Despite the muggy wet day, French society were not deterred from spending a day at this race of the year.
