  • Description

As rumours of impending racial strife spread through Malaysia at the weekend, police set up roadblocks in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and extra security forces were called out.

The alert followed two successive Saturdays of incidents resulting in some five deaths and the burning of several houses. The National Operations Council stated that many offensive weapons had been found in and around the capital.

The danger of trouble was increased by political tension as Malaysia's leading political party, the United Malays National Organisation, moved to foil an attempt to oust Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, on Saturday (July 12).

A further danger lay in the big crowds expected for a two-day weekend horserace meeting, the first held since the interracial rioting in May.
