  • Description

A Cuban bid to have the United Nations General assembly include an item on "colonialism in Puerto Rico" on its agenda was defeated on Thursday (23 September). The Assembly's general Committee voted the move down by ten votes to five, with eight abstentions.

The United States delegate, George Bush, had opposed the Cuban move, calling it an interference in American internal affairs. Speaking to the general Assembly on Friday (24 September), Mr. Bush supported the stand taken by the General Committee, and commented on the presence of free elections in Puerto Rico.

The Syrian delegate, George Tomeh, rebutted the speech by Mr. Bush, with particular reference to a plebescite in Puerto Rico.
