  • Description

Sunday's (4 August) Gold Cup race for hydroplanes on Seattle's Lake Washington proved a costly outing for many competitors.

The race, the most prestigious event on the United States' unlimited circuit, claimed victim after victim as engine problems developed during the heats.

Thousands of fans watched the race from the shore of the lake. They witnessed the most trouble-filled afternoon in Gold Cup history.

There were refuelling problems in the pits, clocks used for timing the race failed to run properly and marker buoys broke loose.

By early afternoon, six of the 15 boats that had qualified for the event had dropped out, mainly with engine problems. Two ended their bid in tragic fashion by catching fire, but their drivers were uninjured.

When the winner-take-all final was run some eight and a half hours after the opening heat, "Pride of Pay-n-Pack" outsped "Miss Budweiser" to capture the event.

"Pride of Pay-n-Pack" was piloted by novice driver george Henley. Its win was a timely wedding gift for the boat's owner, Dave Herensburger. He was married on Saturday night (3 August).
