  • Description

The United Nations general Assembly vote on friday (19 September) to send back to the Security Council the applications for membership by North and South Vietnam.

The Assembly also added that the Council receive the applications with "favourable consideration".

The United States vetoed the applications on 11 August this year.

The veto followed the Security Council's refusal to include on its agenda a similar application by south korea.

Before the General Assembly may consider an application for membership to the United nations it must have a formal recommendation by the Security Council.

After the vote was announced on Friday night the United States delegate to the United Nations said Government did not oppose North and South Vietnam's membership "as such". He explained that Washington was "just not prepared to accept selective admissions".

It is believed the U.S. will withdraw its veto if the way is cleared for the membership of South Korea.

A second veto by the U.S. on the Vietnam question may precipitate a request by communists and Third World members that the two Vietnams be invited to take part in Assembly debates, although they would not be able to vote.
