  • Description

Mexican fighter Jose Napoles, who has consolidated his hold on the world welterweight title, is now in training for his bid to win a second world crown. Napoles has his sights set on Carlos Manzon's world middleweight title. French film star and boxing fan Alain Delon is promoting the intriguing bout at a circus tent in Paris on February 9.

Napoles is already in Paris. He's working hard at his training but newsmen have also remarked on his abundant good humour -- probably in anticipation of a 650,000 france (GBP65,000 sterling) paynight against Monzon in ten days time.

Napoles has known harder time. He was born in Cuba; his father died while he was still a bay and from the age of 10 he was fighting other youngsters for a bounty of ten cents a fight. This unorthodox education plus an abundance of natural talent gave him a fearsome record as an amateur boxer -- fought 113 contests, lost one.

Later, he was to flee from Castro's Cuba and has established himself in Mexico, which has been winning a fast-growing reputation with a series of world-class boxers.
